The Importance of Creativity
|
It's taken tens of thousands of years for our species to develop advanced language and communication. It would be silly not to capitalize on that aspect of human evolution.
In order for us to continue to grow and evolve, we need to nurture the subtle art of creative expression in everyone. As Elizabeth Gilbert talks about in the video, creative genius is not limited to one human being with a particular talent. Have you ever had a really great idea form in your mind, but then several months or years later you find that someone else has grabbed onto your idea and made it real? |
That’s because these designs are like world-wide broadcasts sent from the heavens, hoping to reach someone who can translate the idea.
Many people think they’re not imaginative or particularly creative, but that's not true. We all have had to invent something a time or two, even in what is considered “mundane” life. When you have very little food in the cupboard, for instance, you have to figure out what kind of meal you can make from yellow cake mix, frozen peas, eggs, and milk. Or maybe you find yourself trying “everything in the book” to console a toddler in the middle of a meltdown, but find the only thing that works is something you had to make up on the spot, like playing peek-a-boo by getting your tired ass in and out of the dryer.
We don’t all need to take up the chisel and become professional sculptors, but we most certainly should find a way to externalize our natural creativity. There is a euphoric sort of release in that process. It’s as if something horrid leaves your body, and even if the piece is terrible, you are free from its rambunctious behavior. You’ve kicked the child out of the house after doing everything you could to make it into something wonderful. There is an overwhelming sense of satisfaction when we are able to make something from the loins of our body, mind, and soul.
We need to stop pretending like we have no idea how to build these happy moments of comfort and contentment. By assigning the gifts of creativity and innovation only to a select group of people, that puts an enormous amount of responsibility on their collective shoulders. We risk stunting our growth as a people and a culture if we don't expand our minds a little more every day. It must be everyone’s job to recognize and nurture all forms of creative expression.
Having vision and the means to bring it to life allows you to better understand the process of growth, as well as the beauty and erratic nature of inspiration. With a bit of cleverness, we could all live forever by opening our minds to the divine connection of the imagination. It’s never too late to immortalize yourself. Personally, I like the thought of archeologists 1000’s of years from now digging up my scraps of scribbles and thinking they’re proof of magick, or even a brand new language.
So, with that said…
Stay Inspired.
